A Complete Interceptor 650 Scrambler Build Without Cutting the Frame

This 2023 Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 was transformed to show how a complete scrambler-style motorcycle can be created without turning the project into a permanent frame modification.

The build brings together most of the scrambler-oriented parts developed by Bonvent Motorbikes for the Royal Enfield 650 platform. The rear section is shorter and more compact, the front profile is raised, the centre of the motorcycle feels lighter, and the black-and-gold finish creates a more premium and cohesive identity.

Although the finished motorcycle looks significantly different from the original roadster, the original rear frame loop, mounting points and wiring harness remain intact. The Bonvent components were designed around the existing motorcycle rather than requiring the motorcycle to be permanently adapted around the parts.

This approach is particularly relevant for riders who want a distinctive Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 custom build while preserving the possibility of returning the motorcycle to its original configuration later.

Why We Avoid Cutting the Interceptor 650 Rear Frame Loop

Cutting the rear frame loop is a common modification on café racer, bobber and scrambler projects. It can create a dramatically shorter rear profile, but it also permanently alters the motorcycle.

A permanently cut frame may make the motorcycle more difficult to return to stock and can reduce its appeal to future buyers. Depending on the rider’s country, structural modifications may also require additional documentation and may complicate technical inspections or insurance declarations.

For this reason, Bonvent developed a different visual solution. Instead of removing the rear loop, the scrambler rear mudguard passes over it and conceals its final section.

The sides of the mudguard are shaped around the original frame tubes. From normal viewing angles, the rear loop appears to finish beneath the seat and mudguard, creating the visual impression of a much shorter frame without actually cutting it.

This trompe-l’œil effect is one of the most distinctive elements of the build. It gives the motorcycle a radical custom silhouette while preserving the original structure underneath.

The Bonvent Scrambler Kit Rear Conversion

The rear transformation is based on the Bonvent Scrambler Kit for Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650.

The kit brings the main rear components together into one coordinated conversion:

  • A handmade solo seat
  • A raised rear mudguard shaped around the original frame loop
  • A compact LED tail and brake light
  • A license plate holder
  • Rear indicator mounting points
  • A license plate light
  • Model-specific brackets and installation hardware
  • A plug-and-play rear wiring solution

Rather than assembling unrelated universal components, the parts were developed to work together visually and mechanically on the Royal Enfield 650 platform.

A handmade ribbed solo seat

The solo seat gives the motorcycle a flatter and more compact upper line. Its ribbed upholstery is padded rather than purely decorative, helping create a comfortable riding surface while retaining the narrow proportions expected from a vintage scrambler seat.

The Bonvent logo is positioned discreetly on the side of the upholstery. Depending on the desired colour direction, the seat is available in black or brown finishes.

On this build, the black ribbed seat supports the monochrome bodywork and allows the gold tank details and rear suspension reservoirs to remain visible as accent colours.

A hidden lighting support and compact rear light

The rear lighting support is concealed beneath the mudguard and seat area. This keeps the tail light assembly visually separate from the frame loop and helps maintain the illusion of a shortened rear section.

The compact rear light integrates the tail and brake light functions without introducing a large housing behind the seat. The license plate holder is designed with an adaptable mounting area to accommodate a wide range of international plate formats.

Rear indicator mounting points are positioned on each side of the license plate. This keeps the turn signals aligned and symmetrical while leaving the rear mudguard and seat line visually clean.

A Two-Part High Front Mudguard

The raised front profile is created with the Bonvent High Front Mudguard for Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650.

The system is divided into two complementary parts.

The upper mudguard creates the high-mounted scrambler and rally-inspired silhouette. It sits visibly above the tyre and immediately changes the visual balance of the front end.

The lower section remains close to the wheel. It helps limit spray and debris travelling toward the rider and the lower part of the motorcycle, providing practical protection that would otherwise be lost with a purely decorative high fender.

Combining the two sections creates a stronger scrambler identity without ignoring everyday road use. The result is more complete than simply removing the original mudguard and fitting a small upper blade.

Mitas Block-Pattern Tyres on the Original 18-Inch Wheels

The original road-oriented tyres were replaced with Mitas block-pattern tyres to reinforce the scrambler proportions.

The motorcycle uses a 120/90-18 tyre at the front and a 140/80-18 tyre at the rear. Their taller profiles and pronounced tread pattern give the Interceptor 650 a more substantial stance than the original road-oriented setup.

The wider rear tyre fills the space beneath the raised mudguard, while the 120/90-18 front tyre works visually with the two-part high front mudguard to create a stronger vintage trail and scrambler profile.

This tyre choice contributes significantly to the appearance of the motorcycle. Rim compatibility, tyre clearance, pressure and road-use suitability should always be checked before reproducing a similar setup.

Slim Side Covers That Open the Centre of the Motorcycle

The original Royal Enfield side covers are replaced by the Bonvent Slim Side Covers.

Their smaller shape exposes more of the frame and visually reduces the mass between the seat and the engine. This makes the centre of the motorcycle feel more mechanical and less enclosed.

The elongated ventilation openings repeat the horizontal direction of the engine cooling fins. This creates a visual connection between the side covers and the parallel-twin engine rather than making the panels look like isolated decorative accessories.

The Slim Side Covers retain the original mounting system and side-cover lock. Because their shape is smaller than the original panels, the factory tool bag may need to be rearranged behind them.

Engine Covers and Heat Shields as One Visual System

The centre of the build is completed by the Bonvent Interceptor 650 and GT 650 Engine Covers and the Bonvent Heat Shield Pair.

Finned engine covers

The engine covers use horizontal fin-shaped details positioned in the same visual direction as the Royal Enfield cylinder fins.

This creates a more continuous black surface around the lower engine area and gives the motorcycle a stronger, more aggressive mechanical character. The covers also provide an additional physical barrier around the original engine cases.

They should not be treated as a replacement for dedicated crash bars or structural engine protection, but they can help shield the original side cases from light contact and minor surface damage.

Heat shields around the injector area

The smaller heat shields are installed higher on the motorcycle, near the injector and upper engine area.

Their main practical purpose is to help redirect part of the hot airflow away from the rider’s legs during traffic, warm weather and low-speed riding. Visually, their horizontal lines continue the same design language as the engine covers and side panels.

Used together, the side covers, heat shields and engine covers create a layered centre section that feels designed as one complete system.

A Simple Black Wrap That Changes the Original Fuel Tank

The fuel tank remains the original Royal Enfield unit. The standard paintwork originally combined black, gold and a contrasting red lower section.

Instead of repainting the entire tank, a small piece of black vinyl wrap was applied over the red area. This relatively simple and affordable modification changes the overall appearance significantly.

Removing the red accent leaves a more restrained black-and-gold colour scheme. The gold tank stripe also works naturally with the gold reservoirs of the rear shock absorbers.

A further variation could be to combine this colour scheme with gold wheels or gold wheel details. That would strengthen the connection between the fuel tank and suspension while keeping the rest of the motorcycle predominantly black.

Compact Retro LED Indicators and Plug-and-Play Wiring

The original indicators were replaced with Bonvent Mini Retro LED Indicators.

Their compact circular shape suits the classic scrambler direction better than an extremely modern strip indicator. They remain visually discreet while retaining a shape that feels coherent with a vintage-inspired Royal Enfield custom build.

The electrical installation uses dedicated Interceptor 650 and GT 650 Indicator Adapters. These connect the aftermarket indicators to the original Royal Enfield connectors without cutting or splicing the factory wiring harness.

At the rear, the Royal Enfield Rear Wiring Adapter provides connections for the tail light, brake light, license plate light and rear indicators.

Because LED indicators consume less electrical power than the original bulbs, the motorcycle may interpret the lower load as a failed indicator and flash too quickly. When required, plug-and-play LED resistors can be added to restore the normal flashing rate.

Plug-and-Play Does Not Mean Generic

One of the objectives behind this build was to demonstrate that accessible installation does not have to result in a generic-looking motorcycle.

The rear mudguard, seat, side covers, engine covers, heat shields and high front mudguard were designed for the proportions and mounting points of the Royal Enfield 650 platform.

For this specific build:

  • The original rear frame loop was retained.
  • No frame cutting was required.
  • No welding was required.
  • No permanent drilling was required for the Bonvent components.
  • The original wiring harness was not cut or spliced.
  • The original mounting structure remains available.
  • The conversion can be removed and the original parts reinstalled.

The result is a motorcycle that appears deeply modified but remains mechanically respectful of the original platform.

Compatible With the Continental GT 650 Platform

Although this build uses an Interceptor 650, the main Bonvent components shown here are also designed for the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 where stated on their individual product pages.

The Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650 share much of their underlying platform, allowing the same rear conversion, side covers, engine covers, heat shields, indicator adapters and high front mudguard to be used across both models.

The final appearance will differ because of the GT 650’s fuel tank, handlebars and riding position, but the same parts can form the basis of a more aggressive Continental GT 650 scrambler or custom roadster project.

Final Result: A Modern Royal Enfield With a Vintage Scrambler Identity

This black-and-gold Interceptor 650 demonstrates how several coordinated modifications can transform the motorcycle more effectively than one isolated styling part.

The raised front mudguard and block-pattern tyres establish the scrambler stance. The rear conversion shortens the visual line without cutting the frame. The slim side covers open the centre of the motorcycle, while the engine covers and heat shields create a stronger mechanical identity.

The small tank wrap is an equally important detail. By simplifying the original paint scheme, it allows the gold accents and black components to work together across the complete motorcycle.

The finished build feels more aggressive than the original Interceptor 650, but it does not lose the simple mechanical character of the Royal Enfield 650 Twin.
